Synthesis and polymerization of active ester monomers based on 4-vinylbenzoic acid
2007
Abstract Nine active ester monomers based on 4-vinylbenzoic acid have been synthesized. Under free radical polymerization conditions these monomers could successfully be polymerized yielding reactive polymers with molecular weights of around M n = 20.000–50.000 g/mol and molecular weight distributions M w / M n of around or below 2 in good yields. Polymer analogous reactions with amines have been investigated by time-resolved FT-IR spectroscopy and it was found that especially poly(pentafluorophenyl 4-vinylbenzoate) featured a significant reactivity, such that polymer analogous reactions proceeded quantitatively with amines within less than 5 min at 0 °C.
Polyether Core-Shell Cylinder-Polymerization of Polyglycidol Macromonomers
2005
The synthesis and polymerization of macromonomers containing a polymerizable styrene head group and a tail of ethylene oxide derivatives of different character were investigated. The synthesis of macromonomers was based on living anionic polymerization of oxiranes. Two monomers were used: 1-ethoxyethyl glycidyl ether (glycidol acetal), which after hydrolysis forms hydrophilic glycidol blocks and glycidyl phenyl ether forming hydrophobic blocks. Polymerizable double bonds were introduced by terminating the living chain with p-(chloromethyl)styrene. The radical polymerization of the macromonomers was carried out in water with addition of a non-polar solvent (benzene) and AIBN as initiator. Co…
Synthesis and degradation of poly (2-hydroxyethyl methacrylate)-graft-poly (ε-caprolactone) copolymers
2004
Abstract Poly (e-caprolactone) macromonomers carrying a methacryloyl end groups were synthesized using different lanthanide derivatives as catalysts, and characterized by SEC and 1 H NMR. Hydrophilic–hydrophobic copolymers from macromonomers and 2-hydroxyethyl methacrylate (HEMA) were obtained by solution free radical polymerization. Depending on the feed ratio of the two components, different copolymer structures were obtained. The expected graft structure of the copolymers was confirmed by 1 H NMR. Thermal properties of the copolymers were determined by DSC and TGA. Hydrolytic and enzymatic degradations of the materials were performed. Poly (2-hydroxyethyl methacrylate)- graft -poly (e-ca…
Polymerization of ε-caprolactone using heterobimetallic lanthanocene complexes
1997
The chiral heterobimetallic complexes Li[Ln(η 5 :η 1 -C 5 R 4 1 SiMe 2 NCH 2 CH 2 R 2 ) 2 ] (ln= Y, Lu; C 5 R 4 1 = C 5 Me 4 , C 5 H 4 , 3-C 5 H 3 tBu; R 2 = OMe, NMe 2 ) have been found to polymerize e-caprolactone to give a polymer of high molecular weight (M n > 20000) and moderate polydispersity (M w /M n < 2). Failure to observe a correlation between monomer/initiator ratio and molecular weight suggest a polymerization mechanism different from a pseudo-anionic mechanism
Poly(isoglycerol methacrylate)-b-poly(d or l-lactide) Copolymers: A Novel Hydrophilic Methacrylate as Building Block for Supramolecular Aggregates
2010
On the basis of a new acetal-protected glycerol monomethacrylate monomer (cis-1,3-benzylidene glycerol methacrylate/BGMA) a series of potentially biocompatible and partially biodegradable homo- and block copolymers were synthesized. ATRP polymerization of BGMA yielded well-defined polyacrylates with pendant benzylidene acetal groups and high glass transition temperatures (115−130 °C). This hydrophobic poly(cis-1,3-benzylidene glycerol methacrylate) could be readily transformed into the hydrophilic and water-soluble poly(1,3-dihydroxypropyl methacrylate), referred to as poly(isoglycerol methacrylate) (PIGMA). It exclusively contains primary hydroxyl groups and therefore differs significantly…
PEG-based Multifunctional Polyethers with Highly Reactive Vinyl-Ether Side Chains for Click-Type Functionalization
2011
Introduction of highly reactive vinyl ether moieties along a poly(ethylene-glycol) (PEG) backbone has been realized by copolymerization of the novel epoxide monomer ethoxy vinyl glycidyl ether (EVGE) with ethylene oxide (EO). A series of copolymers with varying structure (block and random) as well as EVGE comonomer content (5-100%) with molecular weights in the range of 3,900-13,200 g/mol and narrow molecular weight distributions (M-w/M-n = 1.06-1.20) has been synthesized and characterized with respect to their microstructure and thermal properties. The facile transformation of the vinyl ether side chains in click type reactions was verified by two different post polymerization modification…

Polypept(o)ides: Hybrid Systems Based on Polypeptides and Polypeptoids.
2015
Polypept(o)ides combine the multifunctionality and intrinsic stimuli-responsiveness of synthetic polypeptides with the "stealth"-like properties of the polypeptoid polysarcosine (poly(N-methyl glycine)). This class of block copolymers can be synthesized by sequential ring opening polymerization of α-amino acid N-carboxy-anhydrides (NCAs) and correspondingly of the N-substituted glycine N-carboxyanhydride (NNCA). The resulting block copolymers are characterized by Poisson-like molecular weight distributions, full end group integrity, and dispersities below 1.2. While polysarcosine may be able to tackle the currently arising issues regarding the gold standard PEG, including storage diseases i…
Cylindrical Polypeptide Brushes
2005
Cylindrical brushes with poly(L-lysine) and poly(L-glutamate) side chains were prepared by grafting through and grafting from techniques. Grafting from is shown to be more successful for the synthesis of cylindrical brushes with high molar mass main and side chains.
